The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp's new Discover Card Tree House was unveiled on May 27th. Paul Newman, executives from Discover Financial Services, Inc., Forever Young Treehouses, Inc., Yestermorrow Design/Build School, campers, parents, special friends and staff attended the ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by the Camp's Executive Director, James Canton.
The wheelchair accessible tree house sponsored by Discover Card and Forever Young Treehouse will allow campers, regardless of physical challenges, to slowly ascend twenty feet in the air by way of a ramp to a 600 square foot tree house with views overlooking Pearson Pond.
The tree house has taken more than six months to design and construct and has involved many volunteers as well as engineers, architects, arborists and specialized craftsmen. This is the FIRST engineered, architecturally designed, A.D.A. compliant tree house built in the world! It is the most extensive ramp structure every built to accommodate wheelchairs for the sole purpose of play. Climbing trees, enjoying the sounds and smells of the forest, and imagining adventures in a tree house are all important childhood experiences that we would like our campers to have.
All of us at Camp are indebted to our friends at Discover Financial Services for believing in this project enough to underwrite its cost. As result we will name this fantastic new structure The Discover Card Tree House - a place where children can discover nature in ways they have only imagined.
